What Matters / What is on your altar?

I was asked recently if I have an altar at home. This three-piece grouping on my desk came to mind for me.
In the forefront sits the face of compassion, the goddess Quanyin. It was a gift from a very dear friend when I opened my office in Bellevue years ago. As she gave it to me, she told me that one of the most important qualities of my guidance for clients was my kind-hearted compassion. This lovely piece is a daily reminder that my work with clients is so satisfying because it connects my heart and mind. My love of numbers and analysis finds a home in financial planning. And my desire to listen and understand and support brings balance to the cerebral.
This piece becomes even more treasured because I knew the artist, Kirsten Daiensai. I can see his thumbs pushing into the clay to create the base, into the contours of the face to mold the peaceful countenance. I love the wabi sabi sensibility of the firing he achieved, in a kiln in a monastery in Japan.
Our relationship with money is such a personal one and it varies widely across individuals. As an advisor, I believe that being present without judgement encourages you to open to vulnerability and allows exploration and growth beyond the numbers.
